SCOTUS ruled that a judge on the Ninth Circus Court of Appeals cannot render a decision after he has died. Why not? It made perfect sense to the rest of the judges on the Appellate Court. "Federal judges are appointed for life, not for eternity," the justices wrote in an unsigned, five-page opinion.
