On May 29, 1453, Constantinople, the greatest city in the Christian world, finally fell after 700 years of jihad. Muslims raided monasteries & convents, & plundered private houses. They entered the Hagia Sophia, which for a millennium had been the grandest church in Christendom. One last mass was celebrated within its hallowed walls to pray for God's deliverance. The Muslims killed the elderly & weak, & led the rest off into slavery. An imam mounted the pulpit of the Hagia Sophia, declaring that there was no god but Allah, & Muhammad was his prophet. The magnificent old church was turned into a mosque; hundreds of other churches in Constantinople & elsewhere suffered the same fate.
