What America’s Thinking
Regardless of whether police departments have a racism problem or a brutality problem, they most certainly do have an image problem. 48% of black people say they have little or no confidence that their local police treat white and black people equally. By contrast – no pun intended – 42% of whites have a great deal of confidence that their police treat blacks and whites the same.
An overwhelming majority of Americans support various measures to change the way we are policed and to hold officers more accountable for abusing their authority. However, only 16% of Americans want to see cuts to police funding.
By a large margin, Americans believe the killing of George Floyd was wrong and that the police officers involved should be held accountable. A significant majority of those surveyed also said that violent protest is not an appropriate response to Floyd’s death.
