Today, President Donald Trump will travel to the Cleveland, Ohio area. He will tour the Whirlpool Manufacturing Plant in Clyde, Ohio, and deliver remarks there.
The Whirlpool appliance plant has 3,000 employees that can produce up to 20,000 washing machines per day. The Clyde facility is considered to be the largest washing machine factory in the world, at 2.4 million square feet.
Early in his administration, President Trump imposed tariffs on Asian made appliances to stop foreign manufacturers from flooding the United States market with cheap machines. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) later ruled to safeguard American manufacturing with global tariffs on imported appliances to protect U.S. manufacturers.
U.S. Senator Rob Portman said of the president’s visit to his state, “I’m pleased that President Trump will be visiting the world-class workforce at Whirlpool’s Clyde factory.” The Ohio senator said of the ITC’s ruling, “I was pleased that the ITC approved, and President Trump authorized, the safeguard in 2017, and since those tariffs went into effect Whirlpool has increased their investment in their workers and American production.“
