New Zealand’s dramatic scenery is famous for inspiring the Middle Earth inhabited by hobbits and wizards in the “Lord of the Rings” series. But the fictional wizards aren’t the only ones New Zealand is famous for — the city of Christchurch has employed a real-life official “wizard” for more than 20 years. His name is Ian Brackenbury Channell, and according to the job description, he is to "provide acts of wizardry and other wizard-like-services as part of promotional work for the city of Christchurch." For his efforts, he gets paid $10,400 per year. As he ages, Brackenbury Channell is training an apprentice to take over his wizarding ways and keep the quirky tradition alive.
