The term ZIP is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan, and was introduced in 1963. Simultaneously with the introduction of the ZIP code, two-letter state abbreviations were introduced. Robert Moon, an employee of the post office, is considered the father of the ZIP code although he proposed using just three digits; he submitted his proposal while working as a postal inspector. In 1983, an extended ZIP+4 code was introduced; it included the five digits of the ZIP Code, followed by a hyphen and four digits that designated a more specific location.
