Montana is the fourth-largest state by land area after Alaska, Texas, and California. With an area of 147,040 square miles, Montana is slightly larger than Japan. According to the most recent census, the five largest cities in Montana by population are Billings (109,595), Missoula (73,710), Great Falls (58,835), Bozeman (46,746), and the state capital Helena (28,190). The name Montana comes from the Spanish word montaña, which in turn comes from the Latin word montanea, meaning "mountain" or more broadly "mountainous country".
