A young "Nation of Islam" killer barreled through barricades in Washington DC today and killed a policeman. This homicidal perp was luckily killed on the scene.
As is often the case, there were a few immediate verbal attacks on the police for not "shooting him in the leg."
I would therefore like to clear something up. A couple of points, please:
First... If you've never fired a gun at all, just shut the hell up about it.
Now then... let's begin by talking about shooting. Most people practice shooting by going to a rifle range, either indoors or outdoors. You get accustomed to the same distance, and the same conditions too. You're standing still, your target is stationary (it's stuck in the ground or pinned to a wall), and you take your time making each shot. With practice and talent, you can get pretty accurate.
And if for some reason you miss the target, it's okay, because the range is designed to catch/absorb bullets that miss the target so they don't hurt anyone.
However... Police responding to a threat such as today's "Nation of Islam" killer are not indoors; they don't have the luxury of taking time to aim calmly, they are under attack themselves, and their target is NOT stationary, but rather, is in motion.
The police need to think of two things:
A) the need to stop him before he attacks more people, and
B) the need to consider where their bullets will go if they miss him.
Let's say you aim at his torso. You're more likely to stop him than if you hit him anywhere else.... and since the torso is the biggest target on his body, you're less likely to miss him.
But let's say you aim at his hand, like Gene Wilder so hilariously did in Blazing Saddles, or you aim at his leg, like today's armchair quarterback pundits are saying the police should have done. You are not only more likely to miss, you're almost CERTAIN to miss, because it's a small target in motion.
What happens to your bullet if that guy's calf or arm doesn't stop it? It continues to move on that same trajectory for about a mile, endangering, pedestrians, children at play, people on a park bench, homeowners at home... anyone who happens to be first in the path of that bullet.
For this reason, aiming at the thug's torso is not just a sensible option; it's the ONLY humane option.
Law enforcement has to care about the big picture.
Television pundits and commie politicians just have to care about getting a newsbite out that helps their ratings or polls well with their target audience.
I am happy the police are more concerned with the community at large than with whether or not a homicidal madman survives the encounter.
And you should be too.
