America is, & has been, a Republican Country

  • First, some good news.  27 states currently have a Republican governor.  In 30 states, Republicans are in the majority in both state houses.  And in 2 other states, Republicans are in the majority in one house of the state legislature, while the Democrats are in the majority in the other.  That leaves only 23 states with Democrat governors, and 18 states with Democrat majorities in both state houses.

We should all be aware that the Democrats once again are in the majority in the House of Representatives, while the Republicans are in the majority in the Senate.  This also bodes well for the nation, as almost every president has either been a governor or senator immediately prior to becoming POTUS; Eisenhower & Trump being the notable exceptions.

And now for some better news; although there is nothing new about this.  It is simply a historical fact.  However, many Americans are ignorant of their own history.

For the last 160 years, ever since Abraham Lincoln became the first Republican president, there has been a member of the GOP in the White House for 96 of those years between 1860 & 2020.  Or, to put it another way, the Republican candidate has won 24 out of the last 40 presidential elections.  Or to put it yet another way, the Republican nominee has been the winner 60% of the time.

More specifically, for those 72 years from 1860 to 1932, a Republican has been president for all but 20 years.  And for these last 52 years, from 1968 to 2020, a Republican has once again been president for all but 20 years.  That's 18 out of 23 terms, and 13 out of 18 terms respectively.

The Democrats did have their run.  During the 36 years between 1932 & 1968, a Democrat was president for all but 8 of them.  But with that said, it must also be remembered that FDR's presidency counts for 16 of those years; 12 when he actually was the president, plus Truman's first term, as he was the vice-president who assumed office upon FDR's death in April of 1945.

Given that the number 72 pops up over and over again (like the 72 years between Washington's first term in 1788 & Lincoln's election in 1860) I predict that not only will Donald Trump win a second term in 2020, but that there will not be another Democrat in the White House until 2040; 72 years after Nixon's 1968 election.
