Pelosi Speaker Again

    by Andrew Zarowny, 1/04/2019

Yesterday marked the first day of the 116th Congress. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was elected Speaker of the House once again. Democrats now run the House while Republicans still hold the Senate. On the first day, we already have divided government, despite Pelosi′s acceptance speech calling for bipartisanship and unity. One Democrat put forward a bill calling to impeachment President Donald Trump for obstructing justice when he fired James Comey. But, there is no evidence of that, even after almost 2 years of the Robert Mueller Witch Hunt Probe.

Democrats also passed a bill to provide money to 6 of the 7 agencies which are still unfunded for the current fiscal year. Homeland Security was excluded from the bill to punish the Trump administration for wanting to secure our southern border. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has already squashed it, stating that the Senate will not vote on any bill unless they know President Trump will sign it. Another meeting will be held at the White House to seek an end to the partial government shutdown and fund border security.

But don′t hold your breath! President Trump is still standing firm, publicly, wanting $5.6 Billion for border security, including money to build some 115 miles of The Wall. Even if the barrier is now just steel slatted fencing. Anything is better than what we have now. Much of the border is still just barbed wired fencing one would see on a cattle ranch. Some stretches of the border have nothing at all!

When President Trump asked for $25 Billion for border security, barely half of that was intended for any kind of a physical barrier. Only about 700 miles of the 2100 mile border needs such barriers. The rest has natural barriers, or can be better defended by electronic means. Some of the money was to go towards doubling the number of Customs Border Protection, CBP, officers. The rest is to add and improve roads along the border and detention facilities.

In 2006, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, along with then-Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, vote to approve a $40 Billion dollar plan to improve border security. Very little of that money was spent on such. So why do they now think that border security, or a barrier, is immoral or racist? Politics! President Donald Trump won in 2016 largely because of his promise to build a wall. Some of it has been built. More will be built this year as contracts were recently signed. The $5.6 Billion will finish a good deal of the rest which needs completing. Again, much of the cash will go for CBP officers and other related needs.
