Any questions about the U.S. Marine Corps going full woke are now cleared up as the branch rolled out a striking image to mark the first day of “Pride Month” — a helmet with rainbow bullets.
The Corps posted on social media that it “takes #Pride” in its LGBT service members. The hashtags #PrideMonth and #USMC were also used along with the image of the Marine helmet with six bullets of different colors. They represent LGBT pride and various social movements.
The strap holding the bullets says “Proud to Serve.”
Christina Pushaw, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ press secretary, questions online how “fixating on differences” builds camaraderie and teamwork. Another social media post drying notes how getting killed by a rainbow-colored bullet is very “progressive.”
Some reactions had a much different tone, criticizing those who would say “this is not MY Corps” by noting that the military has had LGBT members since its inception. Others recall the most frequent reasons for discharge in yesteryear were positive tests for marijuana and being gay.
Former President Barack Obama signed the bill that resulted in dustballing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” on Dec. 22, 2010. It took effect nine months later and ended 17 years of the policy, which was enacted by President Bill Clinton in 1993 as a compromise.
Military data suggests that roughly 13,000 service members were discharged during the life of the policy. Now, all branches of military service, including the Marines, are trying to put those days far behind.
Gen. David Berger, commandant of the Marine Corps, developed a new plan called “Talent Management 2030. This lays out how the branch will develop retention and improve on the 75% of enlistees who leave after their initial four-year term.
He says it will take time before the Marines “look like America,” in part because women did not get combat roles until 2016. Berger goes on to assert the strength of the U.S. military is its diversity. Seriously.
The Corps formed under different circumstances than other branches, Berger admits, “but that is changing.” He further says the Marines are ditching the “manpower” model that favored youth, physical fitness, and discipline.
